ENGAGE Pray

Pray then like this: “... Your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven...." (Matthew 6:9-10)

Jesus Christ put prayer for the full establishment of God's Kingdom on earth at the top of the Prayer Model He gave the Church in Matthew 6:9-13.  He put it ahead of the prayer for our meals, for forgiveness, for protection, etc.

The reason for this is simple: As believers, Jesus expects the establishment of the kingdom of God to be our priority - even in our prayers.

Three times in the last chapter of the Bible (Revelation 22:7,12,20), Jesus said, 'I am coming soon'.  Surely, our response ought to be: 'Yes, Lord Jesus, come soon'. Should we not express this in constant prayer?

In addition, whenever Jesus spoke to His disciples about end-time events, He would usually end with the advice, 'Watch and Pray'. This underscores the importance of prayer (and much prayer) as we approach the end of the age.

God works on earth in response to the prayers of His people. God charts the course, and invites us to work with Him to actualise His plan; "On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the LORD in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth” (Isaiah 62:6-7). Jerusalem will not become a praise on the earth until the Lord Jesus returns, so we have to keep praying.

Also, in the following passages (Revelation 5:8 and Rev 8:3-5) we see the extraordinary value that Heaven places on the prayers of God's people. Obviously, on the second coming of Jesus, God does not expect believers to be passive spectators - we are active participants. We are God's representatives on earth. This is why we need to keep praying.

Our ENGAGE Prayer focuses on praying for the quick return of the Lord, as well as praying for the church, for the world, and for ourselves that we will be counted worthy for the Kingdom of God. Two guidelines are recommended in using the prayer focus:

(1)Please spend at least three minutes every day to pray about the second coming
(2) Please make this your priority prayer - i.e. this will be the first request you will make to God in your daily prayer.
