“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life….” (John 3:36).
The first and most important point is to realise that our ‘good works’ or ‘being a good person’ will NEVER be enough to satisfy the righteous demands of God and escape His judgment. Unless you are entirely perfect, and have never committed a sin, you need God’s plan of salvation – just like the rest of mankind.
Put simply, God’s salvation transfers the perfection of Jesus Christ to you, and your imperfection is transferred to Jesus Christ. By dying on the cross of Calvary, Jesus has paid the penalty of sin for everyone that chooses to believe and accept God’s offer of salvation. This salvation is a free gift, but it can only be received by those that choose to accept the offer.
Taking the offer means accepting God’s verdict that ‘all have sinned and come short of the glory of God’ (Rom 1:23); repenting and turning away from your sins; and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour and following His commandments.
This is called becoming ‘born again’. Jesus made it clear in John 3:3 that “unless a man becomes born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. In plain terms, becoming ‘born again’ activates your spirit and makes it possible to relate with God because God is also a Spirit being.
God’s Spirit starts living in you immediately you become ‘born again’ and will act as your guide throughout life if you maintain your faith in Jesus Christ. He will empower you to resist the ‘old life’ and to start living a ‘new life’ in Christ.
As your relationship with God gets deeper, He will teach you more about Himself, and possibly show you His plan for your life. The fulfilment of God’s plan for your life is the key to peace and fulfilment on earth.
You do not need to stop committing sins before you come to God; you can come as a sinner. It is as you continue to walk with Him that He will help you to break the power of sin. Jesus said: “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32)
